Water is our ultimate elixir, sustaining every cell, fueling vitality, and harmonizing our very existence. Yet we take for granted that water is one of our most basic needs. We think about it passively and drink it mindlessly, if at all, which means we are susceptible to all sorts of water nonsense.

🚨 THIS IS NOT ANOTHER “DRINK MORE WATER” PLATITUDE POST 🚨

I’m going to break down the 6 common water myths we see everyday and actually arm you with knowledge that you need to better nourish your body and live a hydrated life.

MYTH #1: The average person needs to drink 64 oz of water a day and athletes should drink a gallon of water a day.

Nope. During my pro basketball career, I would obsess over my water intake. I bought into all the fitness myths that preached drinking as much water as possible. So I mindlessly chugged water for years.
But I realized that I was saturating my body with water, but I wasn’t actually hydrating myself. The amount of water you drink does not matter nearly as much as the type of water you’re consuming, which we’ll get into in Myth #2.
Always listen to your own body over generic “rules” and trends. Our bodies are a product of divine design. We are already built with every tool we need to survive optimally. Your body’s thirst signals aren’t emergency alerts - that’s just your body letting you know it’s time to re-up.
Your body needs balance. Too much water can flush your body of necessary sodium and other essential electrolytes and overwork your kidneys.

Power Up: Develop a mindful approach to hydration and drink water throughout the day as needed, rather than strictly adhering to a specific daily quota. Your body is in constant conversation with you, start listening!

Remember, your optimal water intake can vary based on the climate you live in,  your body composition, and other factors. Tune into your body, and beware of one size fits all advice, especially when that advice ends with an ad for a ‘motivational' water bottle.

MYTH #2: Water is just water - the tap is just fine for me.

Absolutely NOT. Listen, I know it may seem like different types of water are just scams and bogus upcharges (unfortunately many of them are - see Myth #3). But don’t let that cloud your vision, not all water is created equal!!
Most of us are familiar with the water crisis in Flint, Michigan. While Flint grabbed the headlines, there are countless communities across the United States that have forever chemicals, lead, and arsenic in their water. And then there’s community water fluoridation. That’s heavy metals, fluoride, bacteria, and harmful substances pumping straight into our bloodstream and brains! Not only that, but the purification that does happen strips water of immune-boosting minerals and other important benefits.
It’s gotta be a hard no on tap water y’all.

MYTH #3: SmartWater, Life Water, and Essentia are the healthiest, most hydrating water options on the market.

Scammers. This sh*t, Core, Boxed Water (hate to break it to you) - and don’t even get me started on Dasani and Aquafina. All of these brands use “municipal water supplies.” 🔊🔊🔊 AHEM. THAT’S JUST TAP WATER. The same water that comes out of the Dasani factory sink - except even more processed! That means all the same harms of tap water, but with even more chemical treatment and even greater alteration of water’s natural goodness.
All the BS about added minerals and electrolytes or a lengthy filtration process are just creative ways to sell you plastic. They're only adding back in the minerals that have been stripped away. Any time you see “purified water,” see a giant red flag!

Power Up: Just like you would with any of your groceries, find the most natural water possible. Any spring water option will be better than a purified option.

We know the dangers of highly processed food - don’t trust highly processed water either!

MYTH #4: Distilled water is a life hack - it’s the purest type of water you can drink.

Distilled water has gained a lot of hype because of this perceived ‘purity’. However, the process of distilling water can damage the quality of the water and our health.
Distilling water (a process a lot of the fraudsters mentioned earlier brag about) means evaporating the water and then condensing it back into a liquid. When the water evaporates, it leaves behind all minerals and other potential contaminants.
That may sound like a good deal, but those minerals are essential to our health! Drinking distilled water over a long period of time can result in mineral deficiencies, which can cause fatigue, hormone imbalance, weaker bones, muscle cramping, and slower brain function.

MYTH #5: Brands like Fiji, Evian, and Mountain Valley are expensive for no reason. It’s all the same and it’s not worth it to spend that much on just water.

By now you’ve gotten the point: water is not *just* water! Honor your divine being with divine water. Spring water, sourced directly from underground springs, is a gift from nature! By opting for spring water, you invite the purest essence of nature into your body.
Natural spring water has rich mineral content and alkaline pH, which can help to support the body's natural detoxification processes and promote overall health. It’s naturally filtered through layers of rock and soil, which remove impurities while preserving mineral content. This mineral-rich water supports healthy bones, boosts the immune system, and promotes overall health and well-being.

The commodification of natural spring water does mean you’ll have to invest in water, but the investment is worth it!

Power Up your hydration

Mountain Valley Spring Water

Sourced from a protected spring in the Ouachita Mountains in Arkansas since 1871 and only packaged in glass (see Myth #6). Available to order in bulk too - treat yourself to an at-home water cooler!

Evian

Sourced from a spring in the French Alps, the water is naturally filtered through layers of glacial sand.

Fiji Water

Sourced from a natural aquifer in Fiji, which is protected by layers of volcanic rock.

Other great options are Voss, Saratoga, Just Water, and Icelandic Glacial Water.

You can tell by the taste alone that these waters are different! And the bottling processes use the least disruptive methods. But getting the full benefits of spring water doesn’t have to be expensive. Good ‘ole Poland Springs is a great option that you can find basically anywhere.

MYTH #6: Well I’ve read this blog so all that matters is the type of water, right?

To fully honor the great gift that is water, it's essential to consider the vessels we use to hold this precious liquid. Elevate your hydration experience by drinking from glass and/or metal vessels.
Drinking spring water from metal and glass vessels preserves the freshness and flavor of the water. Glass is non-reactive and won’t impart any unwanted flavors, dangerous chemicals, or plastics. Metal vessels like stainless steel or copper are antimicrobial to naturally purify your water and add a touch of earthy goodness to each sip.

Power Up: Use services like Crystal Rock to get 5 gallon glass vessels delivered to your doorstep and fill up your vessel of choice. You might be surprised how much money you save, and how much you start to enjoy your hydration rituals!

Don’t let plastics leach into your bloodstream and stop adding plastic to our global trash pile. Spring water is divine! How you carry it should mirror its natural beauty and nourishment, and honor the Earth that sustains us.

Natural springs nurture and rejuvenate entire ecosystems - harness that sacred power in your own body! And if you’re looking for ways to actualize this material in your own life, book a call and develop your own mindful hydration routine with the support of DCliff Training.
